Society for Nautical Research Awards

 

The Tomlin Fund Awards

 The Tomlin Fund is used, in accordance with the Society for Nautical Research’s aims, to support research into “nautical antiquities, into matters relating to seafaring and shipbuilding, into the language and contents of the sea, and into other subjects of nautical interest”.    The Society allocates £1500 annually from the Tomlin Fund to be awarded for one or for a combination of the following:

 1. Expenses incurred during archival research and the investigation of maritime history , and in particular maritime technology

2. Assistance with survey or research relating to historic ships and shipbuilding

3. The funding for travel to present an appropriate paper at a conference, seminar, or colloquium

4. Assistance with the cost of travel or preparing a paper or publication, e.g. graphic illustrations or photographs

5. In aid of attendance at conferences

 Applications for grants sought from the beginning of the academic year, particularly from members of the Society.    Proposals should state:

  ·                The purpose of the research and how it will be conducted

·                Whether any other application for funding has been made

·                The sum requested and how the money will be spent

·                A brief CV of the individual making the application

·                The names and contact details of two referees 

 

Applications are preferred by email to honsecretary.snr@btinternet.com but proposals may also be sent to the Chairman of the Research, Technical and Programmes Committee, c/o the Hon Secretary of the Society, 6 Ashmeadow  Road, Arnside, via Carnforth, Lancs, LA5 0AE, UK

 Applicants are not normally eligible for more than one award, but in exceptional circumstances may reapply for an award of up to three annual awards dependant upon satisfactory progress reports.

 Successful recipients will be announced in the Society’s newsletter and are expected to submit a brief report on the activity supported by the award within twelve months of receipt.

 The Anderson Fund Award

 The Society also makes awards of up £2000 per annum from the Anderson Fund.   These awards are made available to individuals and to institutions for any purpose related to research into any aspect of maritime history.

 The Council of the Society may, at its discretion, make one award for the whole amount or two or more lesser awards.    The awards will be made on an annual basis.   

Proposals for awards are sought from the beginning of the academic year, particularly from members of the Society.    Proposals should state:

·         Information on the institutions or individuals who will undertake the research

The Anderson Medal

The Anderson Medal is an international award made annually for a written work of history published during the previous calendar year which, in the opinion of the Council of the Society for Nautical Research, has made the most outstanding contribution to understanding the maritime past.   

In making the award the Council may take into account the author’s lifetime contribution to the writing of maritime history.

The written work may cover any aspect of maritime history, e.g. archaeology, biography, exploration, hydrography, industry, shipbuilding, strategy, etc.

  The award is made by the Council of the Society for Nautical Research, after considering the recommendation of its Research, Technical and Programme Committee.

The process of award is as follows:

  • Nominations are sought from November onwards, particularly from members of the Council.
  • Nominations should be made on one side of A4 paper with details of the work and a short review, and should be sent to the Secretary of the RTP Committee, Alex Ritchie whose email is alex.ritchie@nationalarchives.gov.uk
  • A short list will be drawn up at the January meeting of the Committee and circulated for comment.
  • A recommendation to the Council will be made at the March meeting of the RTP Committee.
  • This recommendation will be put the Council at its Spring meeting for decision.
  • The Anderson medal will presented at the AGM of the Society, usually in June each year.
