Welcome to the Society for Nautical Research

HMS Victory's Cutter, presented to the ship and crewed by the Society.

The Society was founded in 1910 to encourage research into matters relating to seafaring and shipbuilding in all ages and among all nations, into the language and customs of the sea, and into other subjects of nautical interest.

Since then the Society has flourished: it now has members in over 30 countries and Overseas Corresponding Members in the United States, Canada, France, Spain, Belgium, The Netherlands, Ireland and Australia.

It maintains close association with universities and other academic institutions, maritime museums and research foundations worldwide.
